Precision tools for tiers of every level
Tailwater started with one problem: a lot of fly tying vises are either too flimsy for a beginner to trust, or priced like they're not for beginners at all. We build tools meant to sit in the middle — precise enough for someone who's been tying for years, simple enough for someone tying their first Woolly Bugger tonight.
Our first product is a rotary fly tying vise built around hardened-steel jaws on brass bushings, a C-clamp base, and a jaw range that holds hooks from #4 down to #24. We sell it on its own for $49.99, or bundled with the tools a new tyer actually needs: the Complete Fly Tying Kit ($79.99, vise plus bobbin holder, whip finisher, hackle pliers, brushes, tweezers, and five spools of 100D/220yd thread) and the Pro Fly Tying Tool Set ($84.99, vise plus a fuller lineup of hand tools for tyers who want to skip straight to a well-equipped bench).
Why precision and rotation matter
A rotary vise lets you spin the hook 360° around the shank to check hackle wraps, ribbing, and body proportions without repositioning your hands — a real advantage for streamers and palmered patterns, explained in more detail in our rotary vs. fixed vise guide. We built our jaw mechanism around that idea from the start: hold the hook securely across the full #4–#24 range, keep the rotation smooth, and keep the whole vise simple enough that a first-timer isn't fighting the tool while they're still learning to tie.
Honest by default
We don't post fake reviews, we don't invent five-star ratings, and we tell you where a budget product has limits. Our published rating is 4.8 out of 5 across 47 verified buyers — not a perfect 5.0, because we'd rather show you a real number than a manufactured one, backed by real verified buyer reviews. See exactly how we arrive at that number, and what we actually check on every vise before we call it done, on our how we test page.
